Thomas Holt in Thurlaston - and George?
« on: Thursday 03 July 14 17:24 BST (UK) »
Am trying to find the birth of George HOLT and his parents.

George HOLT b abt 1826 Thurlaston is my gggf. He was a gardener/seedsman and then butcher. He married Elizabeth CARTER in 1846 and on his marriage certificate he names his father as John, a labourer. George died in Market Harborough in 1885.

I found George in 1841 as a carpet factory boy aged 15 living with a John Coleman 37 labourer, his wife Elizabeth 33 and 4 children. The wife is in fact Elizabeth HOLT, George's big sister. HO107/589/30/17.  I investigated John Coleman a bit more and found he first married Elizabeth's sister, Sarah!!

Elizabeth b1805 and Sarah b1807 were 2 of the 10 children I believe born to Thomas HOLT and Hannah, all at Thurlaston.

I cannot find a marriage for Thomas to a Hannah but did find a marriage to Ann ROWLSON 20 Dec 1801 in Earls Shilton, just close to Thurlaston. There is a possible child Thomas of this marriage, bap 18 Jul 1802 Earl Shilton.

There's a death of a wife, Ann Holt, wife of Thomas, on the Leics burials for Barwell. Aged 22, 11 Feb 1817. Probably died in childbirth?

So was this Ann Rowlson? And who was Hannah? Were they the same. Did Thomas marry twice?

There is a possible death for a Thomas HOLT 23 Nov 1837 Thurlaston aged 66, again from the Leics burials, but this death does not show up on FreeBMD. I guess the system was just so new, some folk maybe didn't register BMDs as they should have done? The age at death gives an approximate DOB for Thomas of 1771.

Is anyone connected with any of these people? I understand the Thurlaston registers were destroyed or are missing or something. I would be so grateful if anyone could shed any light on this puzzle. Thank you.

Suzie (from Orkney)

Hallo Bunnygirl, Thanks for your response.

Well, that certainly puts a name to the one I found who had died. But I wonder why that marriage did not show on the LDS site when I did a search for marriages 1790-1820?
Thank you anyway. I'll ponder on that one.

Hallo Wllsy,

Another marriage which didn't turn up on my LDS search but the encouraging news is that this wife is actually called Hannah - first Hannah I have seen! That's definitely worth pursuing - somehow.

Does anyone know of any children of this marriage?

Thanks again.

Trish, thanks for your response.
Your info was helpful - some of it I did not have - but some of it I have already found. I did like that Hinckley Banns of Thomas and Hannah and am pursuing that line of enquiry now.

Many thanks
Suzie
