This one in the Lancaster Gazette (9th april 1884) is of best quality and a long article. The Liverpool mercury i could only find an article on the 12th which was a bad image.

Thanks for that - I wonder what sentence he got?

She married Hoseph Herbert Preston in Kings, New York in 1895 (I am waiting for the cert). He was a lodger with her family on the 1891 census. I have records of their return from New York 2 weeks(ish) after the marriage, but cannot find their departure/arrival in US. Did they elope together in order to marry, or did one leave and the other follow to bring their 'true love' back?

Seems he didnt get any sentence at all.
Just told to leave her with her father for two years and then he could go and claim her. Judge said they would have been legally married if they had had her perents consent. Minimum age for marriage was only changed to 16 in 1929!
It isnt clear if the marriage was adjudged never to have happened or formally anulled.
He didnt go back for her and she married in New York - on the paperwork she declared thios new marriage as her first marriage.
