Farnworth Workhouse, Lancashire
« on: Monday 13 October 14 08:25 BST (UK) »
My ancestor died in this workhouse in 1873 and I'm wondering where they buried deceased people.  Was it a family responsibility, or a section of a cemetery with unmarked/marked graves etc.  Does anybody have any idea?  Thanks.  PippaR

That would be the Bolton workhouse - http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Bolton/

Records apparently at Bolton Archives and Local Studies.
http://www.boltonlams.co.uk/archives/archives-indexes/workhouse-registers/

I believe that the family were allowed to take the body for burial, if they chose.
Otherwise probably a pauper's grave in a local graveyard - and almost certainly multiple bodies in the grave?

Thank you.  I'll check it out as it would be nice to know the final resting place.

Have you checked St James, Bury as a lot of people from the workhouse in Farnworth were buried there?

I have found family who died in the workhouse buried there.

The records for the Fishpool workhouse are available in Bolton Archives. There is a death register; in it my ggg grandmother who died there in 1897, is described as "Interred by friends". Her grave is in Heaton Cemetery.

IIRC, the entries for other inmates gave locations which would be appropriate to their religion as given in the Creed Registers. For CofE, the usual place, as pollymann says, was St. James at New Bury, about a mile south east.

Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Census information is Crown Copyright. See www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for details.

Hi all, I got onto the sites suggested and they are terrific, except I couldn't locate my ancestor.  The 1871 census and 1872 rate books has her (Ann Bennett) at 7 Crook Street, Ardwick with her 4 sons (John, Joshua, William, Charles).  In April 1873 John marries (Christiana) and living with them is youngest brother Charles, aged 8, who dies in September and I haven't yet tried to determine where he might be buried.

I have the death certificate for Ann Bennett (I believe the correct person) with the following:
No. 302
When and where died:  5 July 1873 Union Workhouse, Farnworth.
Age: 44 years
Occupation:  wife of John Bennett, a carter
Cause of death:  Serous Apoplexy from natural causes
Information received from J Broughton Edge, Coroner for Lancashire, Siq??? Field, 11 July 1873
When registered:  11 July 1873
Registrar:  Peter Thornley

Don't know why it says 'wife of' and for Charles it says 'son of' John ???

I live in Australia so I am perplexed about the Districts and, I'm not expecting anyone to do the work for me, but I'm really stuck on how best to resolve this.  I

If this information is on microfilm, can a copy be ordered or just pay for someone to look them up?  Do I need to persist with the avenues suggested in case I've just got myself in a state of confusion?

Thanks again, PippaR

Hi Pippa
I had a quick look on Deceased Online and there is a burial for an Ann Bennett on 11th July 1873 at Tonge Cemetery. It is a pay per view site and with a common name it could just be a coincidence but Tonge isn't that far away from Farnworth. To view the burial scan it would cost £2.00 and if you are lucky it may give some more details.

GenUKI is the place to go, for snips of information re parishes, districts and counties! ;D

See: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/FarnworthD/
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/TongewithHaulgh/
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Tonge/
and
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/bolton.html

The whole of the country was, in 1837, divided into Registration Districts (each with a Superintendent Registrar).
Each District consisted of a number of parishes - Bolton has 32 parishes!
