Catholic Baptisms in Garstang pre 1767
« on: Friday 24 October 14 14:18 BST (UK) »
Good afternoon all
Yes the pest is here again !
With a little help from my friends on here I am really doing well with my family but I have now hit another brick wall as I cannot find Richard Blacow below baptism/birth anywhere

To be honest I have been down the wrong path and I took the line back through Richard Blacow of Barton and also Richard Blacow of Broughton!! These are not my Richards as I now realise.

Richard Blacow was born c1763 on his marriage to Margaret Charnley of Cockerham  (7 Jan 1790) it states he is Richard Blacoe of Cabus

All of his childrens baptisms are at Saint Mary and Saint James-Rc,Scorton,Lancashire,England

One of his daughters Alice died very young and on her burial which I found at 14 May 1803 St Helen Garstang, Lancashire  it states
Alice daughter of Rich Blacow of Cleveley died 12th May age 4 years

He was still alive and living with one of his sons in Manchester on the 1851 census it says he was born Garstang

I cannot find his death.

A few of his grandchildren were born Nateby. One of them Margaret b 30th March 1821 (my husbands 2nd great grandmother) states that she was born at Nateby Hall

So the clues are there Cabus, Garstang & possibly Nateby but I have been knocking my head against a brick wall for weeks now and not getting anywhere

Please could someone give me an idea where he may have been baptised as a Catholic in 1763 as I know  St Mary RC Garstang did not start till later - which would be the nearest?

Many many thanks in advance

Marilyn

As he has been moving around since his wifes death it could be this one  :-\
September qtr 1851
BLACOW    Richard
Preston    21   406

I don't think it is this one as there is a suitable candidate in Heysham who vanishes before 1861
Deaths March qtr 1860
Blackow    Richard
Lancaster    8e   417

Many thanks for your input

I had a look at the first one on Lancs BMD but it is showing his age as 0

He had sons who had moved to Haifax Yorkshire & surrounding areas as well so he could be anywhere

Really grateful for your help

Many of the Catholic registers did not start before 1770 when Catholics began to feel safer so it's possible you won't find a baptism. However, have you checked the 1767 Returns of Papists? claytonbradley

Many thanks for your interest

To be honest I had never heard of the 1767 Returns of the Papists but a quick google sorted that out.
Is there anywhere online I can view this? Problem is I am a bit of an oldie and cannot get about much so I can only do my research on line.

Regards
Marilyn

I haven't tried it myself, but it says you can search the records on-line here:

http://www.portcullis.parliament.uk/calmview/

You need to search using 'Papist returns'

http://www.parliament.uk/business/publications/parliamentary-archives/archives-highlights/familyhistory/sources/catholics/

Hope it works.  Kit

There is a copy at Lancashire Archives in Preston. Maybe they would do a quick look up for you. Some of the family history societies may also have copies, claytonbradley
