Looking for the births of James Giblett and Mary Ann Baker somewhere in England , born about 1820 . Also their marriage also somewhere in England about 1851 . I think they immigrated to Australia with one son James Bartlett on the ship Slains Castle in 1851 ?. thank you if you maybe able to help .

Only one James Giblett popped up, b. 1820 +/-5, anywhere in England. Trouble is, his son is called Robert so may not be the right family.

1851 HO107/1935/211/15
Northload? St, Meare, Somerset
James Giblett, head, 32, Farmer of 70 acres and labourer, b. Meare, Somerset
Mary Giblett, wife, 26, farmer's wife, b. Glastonbury, Somerset
Robert Giblett, son, 1, b. Glastonbury, Somerset
Safara? Giblett, mother, widow, 80, b. Meare, Somerset
Elizabeth Hodges, servant, 19, b. Butleigh?, Somerset

In fact, I don't think the above is the right family.

On FreeBMD there is:
James Bartley Giblett, born Sep qtr 1850, Islington Vol 3/308

The census was taken on 30 March in 1851 - do you know when the ship Slains Castle left England in 1851?

Dear Koromo
Very sorry to say , it's the wrong one . The two I am looking for only had the one son . By my research they left England in 1850 arriving 1851 in Australia .

http://www.londonancestor.com/iln/colonisation.htm - Slains Castle left London September 1850 - possible, since James 'Bartley' Giblett could have been born Jul/Aug/Sep in 1850 from that index.  The images Ancestry has are so bad I can't even see what his middle name is.

According to The Times the Slains Castle sailed 28 September 1850 for Port Phillip.  http://www.immigrantships.net/newcompass/pass_lists/listjaunay.html - and possibly arrived 25 Jan 1851.

Possible James Giblett m. Wells X 759 Mar 1849 - but this is probably the other James found in 1851, there's no matching Mary Ann Baker. Can't see another James Giblett 1847/8/9/ or 1850.

Could it be possible James married twice ., as Mary Ann Baker was the wife that he came out here with . After his death she remarried my G,G,Great uncle Edward Lancaster .
I did find the three of them on the ship . The records had James ,Mary Ann and James  B . PAGE 1 BOOK M/F . I do not know what the M/F stands for , looked through the records ,asked people at my local Genealogy club no answers to that .

Hi Cloke

I think you are just unlucky that the Slains Castle left England six months or so before the 1851 census. Although James Bartlett/Bartley was born in Islington, it doesn't mean that his parents came from Middlesex - they were likely to have been in London in preparation for catching the boat out to Australia. Would getting his birth certificate help?

As an observation only: in 1851 there seem to be a lot of Gibletts born/living in Somerset. I don't know if the 1841 is indexed for Somerset, or whether it's worth asking on the Somerset board -  it would be a bit like finding the proverbial needle ...

Regards
Koromo

Yes that might be the way to go . On the last posting I had the names of the three of them on the ship that was not quite right . The two boys were right ,the other was just Mrs Mary . That is why I am wondering if he married twice . Just found something I had written down last week James B born 1850 Islington London England.
