Stogursey John Symons

Does anyone have access to Stogursey's parish records pre 1728? My ancestor John Symons married Jone Saunders in Lydeard St Lawrence in 1695 /96. John is shown as "of Stogursey".

I have found a John Symons and his wife Jone having children in Crowcombe: Susanna 1705, John 1707, William 1709 and James 1712.

However other unofficial sources show that this couple had children in Stogursey: John 1698, THomas 1701, Francis 1703, George 1708 and Malachii in 1708.

Back in Lydeard St Lawrence, Malachi (of Stogursey) appears to have been buried in 1710 and a Joan Symonds ("wife of John") buried in 1708.

Can anyone untangle this? Plus who was John's parents.

The irony is that I lived near there for 10 years before leaving the UK

i live in stogursey.if any were buried there i could look in the church yard cemetary and see if i can find anything?

Hi, looking at Phillimore's Stoguresy records there is a Frauncis Symons marrying Jane Bishop 4 July 1661. I wonder if the Francis child of John  could of been named after Frauncis.

Later there's Geiles Symons marrying Mary Gudderidge 2 Aug 1670
John Symons marrying Mary Dibble 14 Jan 1675/6

There are others at later dates.

Thats really kind of you Cathyayb. I will have a thought how burials may help me. Mind you, my cousin in Bishops Lydeard recently looked at the grave stones for the early 1800's but they had weathered so badly that they couldn't be read. Unfortunately he is now pretty ill otherwise I would send him on another mission to Stogursey.

Sorry i haven't been in touch since my post but I have been poorly. My wife's on facebook and I will avidly read the FHS website tonight. The Romany connection is not one I have considered or come across. The Palmer, Coles and Symons branches of my tree are my mother's side of the family. My grandad was Thomas john Symons who was born in Taunton in 1889 and raised in Bishops Hull. My grandmother was Lily Palmer, born in Bishops Lydeard in 1893. Her mother was Elizabeth Jane Coles born 1859 Nether Stowey. Her mother was Elizabeth Coles who died giving EJ's births, Her father was James Palmer and mother Elizabeth Sparkes. James had 19 children. I have years of research which I am more than willing to share with you if you send me a PM with your email address. Peewee
