The Sherwood Forresters (Notts and Derbys Regiment) WW1
« on: Sunday 13 July 14 22:29 BST (UK) »
Hoping someone can help me find the personal details of Walter White Nichol/ls, he was a private in the Notts and Derbys Regiment, Enlisted 11/8/15 and discharged 6/3/18.  His army number was 20987 and he was my husbands grandfather.
I cannot find him in any census, although I know from his marriage cert that his father was called Peter and that he (Peter) was a coal miner.  Peter appears to have been married, but in Mansfield workhouse in 1911 and then in the September of that year was in Wakefield prison serving 7 days for 'lodging out'.
Very grateful for any help with this

Probably a complete red-herring, but:

Births, September qtr 1884
Holbeck district    vol 9b, page 340

Nicholls, Walter Whitehead

Added: Welcome to RootsChat! ;D

Is it not possible that Walter was illegitimate, and born Walter White?

Who were witnesses at the marriage?

On A******y there are pictures of Walter White Nicholls & Cyril White together - Cyril looks much younger than Walter - what was their relationship?

Just a correction to your info on first post for your records.

On his medal card it says he was discharged 6/4/1918 as you say. But it has date of entry to theatre of war (France) as 17/8/1915.

You say he enlisted 11/8/1915 but that is not the case.  He would have enlisted some time earlier, then been trained in UK before being sent out to wherever he was sent. The date of 17/8/1915 was when he set foot in France.

It also says he got a SWB - Silver War Badge given to those who have served but now unfit (through injury or sickness etc)

Paulsmum...

Can you tell us how you know he was in Notts & Derby and where that service number 20987  came from?  Do you have other documents with this on within the family? If you do it may help to know what you have

The medal card with that service number and regiment does not have the middle name White - it just says Walter W so I am wondering what else you may to confirm this is the correct one.
