BENNETT'S END- near Hope Bagot. Does it still exist??

My Hammond forebears lived in the Township of Bennett's End (near Hope Bagot), not far from Cainham/Caynham in the early to mid 19th century.

Does Bennett's End still exist? If so, would it be possible for some kind rootschatter to send a photograph of part of the area?

Any information gratefully received.

Hi Minniehaha,

Don't know of any township of that name, but there's a pub called 'The Bennett's End' at Hope Bagot Lane, Knowbury, near Hope Bagot.

An 1835 Voter's registration list refers to "Cainham and Bennett's End"

Thank you both for your input.

I do have a copy of an old Ordnance map which shows exactly where Bennett's End was. It was referred to as a "Township" in the 1851 census, my ancestors having emigrated prior to the 1861 census.

It would appear that it has been swallowed up by progress, but perhaps the pub has taken the name as a reminder of times gone by?

I thought you'd like to know that the Bennetts End Inn has been an inn since 1640 and all the oldest maps call it that.  Who Bennett was and how he met his End is unknown!  You might also like to know that the pub is currently doing very well indeed:  http://www.thebennettsend.co.uk/ We live close by and I have been asked by a guest how the pub got its name, but I don't know.

Not sure if my God-fearing ancestors would have visited it if it served liquor way back then...........
