Help deciphering marriage OPR from Orkney please?
« on: Tuesday 01 October 13 15:01 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Attached is the marriage OPR for my ancestor James Barnetson. I am trying to work out what the words are after his name - I assume it is where he is from.
This marriage took place in South Ronaldsay and Burray (Orkney) and he is marrying Ellen Faubister.
I am also not sure what it says after her name either...basically...can anyone transcribe this record for me?

Many Thanks,
Gaynor.

It looks like "...in Widwall ..." which would be where he was from.
"... Ellen Faubister was booked this day Samuel Foubister lawinor for the woman."

(perhaps?  :-\)

Added: It may be that Widwall is Widewall (try google maps for the location - breathtaking, but very remote. It may be that there was a more thriving community there when your ancestor lived in the area than there is today)

Bookbox is correct. The word is "cauinor" in this extract, but if you look down the page at other entries, you will find it as "cautinor" too.

That makes perfect sense in context.  :)
(I did notice the 'same' word further down the page - the lack of crossed t's threw me)
So is Samuel likely to be Ellen's father? Or just another male relative?

Aaah thank you everyone.

Widewall definitely seems to be a prime candidate, I will check the older maps on NLS Maps for previous spelling.

I thought Samuel Faubister must have been a male relative (perhaps father as she does name her first son Samuel) but have not come across 'cautinor' before I must admit I thought it began with an 'l'! That, however, makes perfect sense.

I will now delve into the records for her birth to Samuel perhaps (not that I think for one minute that it will be that easy!).

Thank you everyone for your help.
Gaynor.

The NLS maps are very good. Find Widewall on google maps first then it will be easier to pin down on the old maps.

I found it last night on one of the early Ordnance Survey maps - it appears to be a parish rather than a town or village. There's not much there today - very few named villages, however you'll notice a lot more on the old maps.

Check the area out using google street view. Idyllic.  :) (but would probably have been a hard life for your ancestors)

Just to let you all know, I have been looking at the maps and it certainly seems that Widewall is where this record is referring to, James Barnetson was a fisherman born in Caithness (Mey, Canisbay) which is just across from Widewall. He and Ellen returned to Mey to settle. It certainly seems to have been a busier place back then but still beautiful now.
Now knowing what a 'cautioner' is (thank you skoosh for the pronunciation!) I have looked into Samuel Faubister and this has helped me determine Ellen's birth details. I had two possible birth dates (and therefore fathers) for her and no way of knowing which one was correct. However, with a little investigation I can now be quite confident in saying that Samuel was actually her elder brother and her father was John.
Thank you very much for all your help in this, it has pulled it together for me.
Gaynor.
