« on: Monday 14 April 14 08:14 BST (UK) »
I'd like some help with this one please:

Glasgow Scot. - Wm. & Agnes Salford Ayrshire - Presby. - Both - Aunt Margt. Nevin  Wollongong - Good

(ditto) - May & Wm. Kaye  Glasgow - (ditto) - (ditto) - As above - (ditto)

(ditto) - on board -

I can't find a 'Salford' in Ayrshire.

Is it possible that Salford is their surname and they come from Ayrshire?
-just a thought.

Hello Jack-a-Lyn,

Thanks for looking.  It does appear to be 'Salford' and not any other known place in Ayrshire such as Irvine or Largs. In 1841 and 1851 census the Morrison family is in Saltcoats.

Sorry, I made an assumption that members would be familiar with the layout of the shipping image. I should have explained that column gives the given names of the parents and states if dead or if living then where, as of the shipping date.

So William and Agnes are the parents of Malcolm and both are living in 'Salford' (probably written as it was heard) Ayrshire. Surname not given as assumed to be MORRISON.

Mary and William Kaye are the parents of Mary MORRISON nee KAYE, that's why for the wife the maiden name is added. And they are both living in Glasgow as of the shipping date 1863. So they would be in 1861 census but possibly not the 1871. For son William parents are on board.

'Severn' Arrived 1863 - Sydney and family
MORRISON Malcolm  29  Blacksmith  Glasgow Lanarkshire  C of Scot.  Both
MORRISON Mary  28  Wife  Glasgow
MORRISON William  8

Hi Fred,

Thanks for the extra details. I'm not familiar with this type of shipping record nor the countryside so your time to explain things is much appreciated. Another learning experience in this wonderful world of family history.  :)
