There was a Jonathan  Spurritt in Burford in 1816,who was the victim of a theft of a letter containing a one pound bank of England note-the thief was executed!!

A Thomas Spurritt was in Bampton, a surveyor, and a Robert Spurritt was there as a grocer, in Mill Street-he died on October 22nd 1880 aged 43.

Maybe the same Thomas Spurritt in 1886 tried to sell his dead farming stock, but later withdrew them from the sale.

There was a horrible murder of a Mr. John and Mrs. Spurritt of Steeple Aston, who had a pub/hostelry on the Banbury Road. The murder took place around January 18th, 1754.

Details from the Oxford Journal.

, Thanks for that Tom ,

I found my grt grt grt grnd mthr Susanna Spuritt in 1841 census living in mill st , occupation  grocer , she was then aged 60, widowed with a daughter Ann aged 15yrs and a son Robert aged 3yrs , these would be my grt grt grndmthrs Sara's siblings,.

This would seem to be the Robert who died in 1880

would I be able to access the journal ?

                     Regards Pauline

Not a problem:

All that info comes from 48 British national newspapers available from gale Databases, but available online at some libraries.

Hi Pauline,

Richard SPURRIT was my 4th great grandfather.  He and Susanna had five children: Richard, Thomas, Ann and Robert.  I descend from Thomas and I have a lot of infromation on the descendants of Richard and Thomas, but not the others.

I also know that Richard had a sister Jane and a brother Robert.  However, I am really stuck trying to get further back.  I am pretty sure that I am related to the William that was murdered in 1754 and I have various other links further back but I can quite join them all up.  I woudl be very happy to compare notes.

Regards

Rob

Hello Rob.
Robert Spirit (Spurrett) born about 1780 in Wootton, Oxfordshire was
my 5th Greatgrandfather, after app been in the Dorset milita 1799-1808
he and his family moved to Hexham. He died 1853 Gilligate, Hexham. my greatgreat aunt who lives in America recalls him having brother Richard.
Also that descendants came from Stow-on-the-Wold, Woodstock, Oxon,
Burford etc.,
Robert married a Susanna (unknown) children-Jane 1803 Devon, Susannah 1810
Woodstock Oxon, Stephen 1815, Mary A 1818 Hex, Elizabeth 1819 Hex, Ann
1821 Hex and Richard 1827 Hex. Think Robert lived in Woodstock Oxon for
little while after been demobbed in 1808.

 Hi Lynne

My grt grt grndmthr was Sara Spurritt, she was born 1808 Woodstock , and was the neice of your ancestor Robert, her father being Roberts brother Richard b1781 Woodstock.

Apparently  Robert married Susannah ,who had been origionally from Hexham in Northumberland , he was discharged from the militia and they returned to Hexham taking his neice Sara with them , where she met and married my grt grt grndfather Joseph Armstrong.
