Henry Giles

It's interesting that Henry called his first and only son Daniel after his stepfather as tradition was first son after dad's dad. Now Daniel was probably the only  father Henry knew but it's interesting that while he seems to have claimed  his natural father's surname he has not used the forename Henry.
What was Daniel Mathieson's father called?
I think you are correct Henry was born outside marriage but whether his natural father was called Henry Giles or not you might never know. There seems to be a dire shortage in Scotland of men with that name in the years 1851-1861- only the English comedian- and no deaths that I could find.

I wondered if Daniel was indeed his father and the couple married after Henry's birth (wouldn't be the first time that happened)  . How is Henry listed on the Census -son or stepson?

Forgot to ask, does Barbara Mathieson's death certificate mention Giles?

Daniel's father was Thomas Mathieson. Henry appears on the census as "son". On my Granny's death certificate her father is named as Henry Mathieson.

They seem to be swapping back and forward from Giles to Mathieson all the time. Very confusing
Maybe you'll never solve this or maybe it'll take you years!
It took me about 7 years (researching on and off) to solve a family mystery.  Just keep gathering as much info as you can. But at the end of the day Giles might just have been a name Henry made up.

Is it possible that there could be records in Lochgelly of my Great Grandfather Henry Giles birth around 1853?

According to the Census I've found my Great Grandfather Henry Giles was born about 1853 in Lochgelly. His mother was Barbara Whyte and his father may have been Henry Giles. I've been unable to find a record of his birth so far and I would be grateful if anyone could find any information about him. I can find no record of Henry Giles senior either! Thank you.

Thank you DORAN54 for your reply. I have asked for this post to be merged with another post I have named "Henry Giles" Henry Junior was married three times and he didn't always use the same name! I've been unable to find a birth for him around 1853 in the OPR. I'm puzzled as I can't find any records for Henry senior my Great great grandfather. Thank you.
