Richard Alexander Mackie
« on: Saturday 27 December 14 12:59 GMT (UK) »
We have traced RAM born September 1831  in Boulogne-Sur-Mer, Pas-De-Calais, France where he stayed with his family up to the 1851 and 1861 Census in where he is a Shoemaker in Guernsey, Channel Islands.

He emigrated in about 1865 to New York, USA and we have found him in the New York City State Directory at Varipties, 15 Laurens, New York and then in the 1870, 1880 & 1900 New York Census until he died in the New York Alms House Hospital on 26/10/1901.

Now the one thing we cannot trace is from the USA 1870 Census, where he is shown being in the same house as an Elizabeth Mackie, Age 26 - born about 1844 in England, Keeping House - but she does not appear in any other subsequent Census !

Was she married to RAM if so when and where (before or after he emigrated), then did she die sometime after the 1870 census or remarry ?

Any clues to who this Elizabeth was would be gratefully received,

Thanks,

Al & Al

Are you sure of the dates and could you possibly be tracing the wrong person in the U.S.?

1871 Census- Weymouth and Melcombe Regis, Dorset
lodger Richard Macey, age 60, born Guernsey Channel Islands, shoemaker

1881 census- 2 Helen Lane, Melcombe Regis, Dorset, England
lodger Richard Mackie, age 74, born Guernsey Channel Islands, widow, shoe maker

Aghadowey,

Thanks for spotting my 'deliberate' error, birth date now corrected to read September 1831 (previous date shown of 1806 was for his Father).

Apologies for the confusion,

Al & Al

1880 census lists Richard Mackie as single as does 1901 and Almshouse records.

So as we cannot trace Elizabeth as being a relation to this Mackie Family, are we to assume that her name was taken down incorrectly and that she was not a Mackie ?

Thanks,

Could she have been some other relative - a sister, a cousin, a sister-in-law?

All of his known relatives come from Guernsey and none by the name of Elizabeth.

Is there any way of checking the emigration/imigration records, to see of any Elizabeth that may be on the same boat ?

thanks,

There are various passenger lists on www.familysearch.org, but the ones from that time period tend to be hit or miss and give very limited information.

Did Richard have any other relatives in the US?
