ELIZABETH MAHER from Southwark,
« on: Wednesday 10 August 11 08:07 BST (UK) »
My family has wondered if my great-great grandmother Elizabeth Maher Garrett was born in Ireland or not. Some sources say Southwark but tradition tells us of her Irish roots and maiden last name.
She was born around 1839 and died on 13 December 1887 as Mrs. Elizabeth Garrett in Southwark, London England....She was married to Richard Garrett around 1864 around Southwark(or Lambeth).

Hi everyone
1871 and 1881 has her born in Southwark.
There is a birth in 1838 Southwark for an Elizabeth Maher, not saying it's her.
Previous census may hold the key.

The "Elizabeth Hales" bit in the 1841 census is likely to be a mistranscribed Elizabeth Maher I would think. Her name is at the top of the page continuing entries from the Maher family on the opposite page.

There is a registered birth for an Elizabeth Maher  in Oct-Dec 1838 in St Saviour, Southwark (Vol 4 page 422)

Hi Shaun
I didn't list details of birth as there was a chance she was born in Ireland.
Doesn't look that way at all.
Thanks me dear

I looked up St Saviour's in Southwark and see that it was built 1220-1420....

I found Elizabeth's father, Michael Robert Maher marrying Sarah Ware in 1838, the same year that Elizabeth was born.
Her father died on 27 July 1876 in a workhouse.
