Help identify this military Uniform please!
« on: Monday 07 July 14 06:35 BST (UK) »
This is supposedly one James JACKSON (c1787-?) who the family believed was in the Royal Navy about 1820-?
I have a further reference to him in 1816 as being of The Kings Own Staffordshire Militia, when he marries Frances WARD in Bathampton Somerset.
The uniform looks more army than navy to me, but I'm far from certain.
Can anyone identify it, the era, or even just eliminate one of the forces!
Thanks
Clare

I would say this is a military man rather than a naval man, I asume this is a miniature portait, are there any details from his cross belt buckle?

Thanks macintosh!
The pic is a photocopy my uncle took of the original many years ago, and he has lost contact with the person holding the original. (arrgghhh!)
Sadly there's not much good detail in the copy.

Good evening,

The uniform is late 1700s in style, could be used by militia into the early 1800s. Will do a little more research.

Staffordshire had three part-time regiments in this period. The 1st Stafford were Militia - 1st Kings Own Staffordshire Militia. A historical records is available online. But I could not see a reference to an officer called Jackson.

Thanks for the replies!

I have just downloaded some ADM records from TNA confirming that our man was indeed a 1st Lieutenant in Royal Marines in 1835 when he is applying for his son's entry into the Greenwich Hospital School!

He was then (1835) living(/based?) in Dunkerque, France, and had joined the Plymouth Division of Marines on 2nd May 1804, and served on L'Africaine, Phoenix, Hibernia, and Minotaur. Unfortunately no dates for this ship service, but I'm a lot clearer on my man now!

Can't seem to find any records of service for him at TNA… any other ideas??

On one of the required records being sent to James, someone (a friend it would seem) has written "… I would have wished to have heard how you liked Belgium..'. So there's another line of interest!

Thanks so much for your imput!

Your best bet is to trace his service in the Navy Lists, there is a full set available at the National Archives on the open shelves. Some are available on-line (  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,493513.0.html ) the one for 1814 shows a James Jackson 1st Lieut RM with a seniority date of 13 April 1807. If a number appears next to his name this is a Ship's Number, any ship he served on can then be found using the same source e.g. 408 - Minotaur.
