You should try and find out when 10031 was issued in the Northd Fusiliers. It could be that he did re-enlist early in WW1, but did not go overseas before 1916. Often experienced men were kept back to help with training.

Numbering within infantry regiments can be complicated as the same number may be used by Regulars, Militia/Special Reservists or Territorials. You may have to ask on the Great War Forum. You need to put the regiment in the title to attract the right audience.

You could do the same with his ASC number.

Thank you everybody for the replies, will be getting on with that shortly. I am still waiting for the lad to come back to me with his mums grandparents details so that I can do some more digging.
Apparently she was at a wedding all day yesterday so will probably have to wait until tonight.

Thanks again
Tom

Good evening,

I have searched far and wide for the "MERIT" badge but no luck so far. I would say it was awarded for some sort of test, ie; HONOURS, DISTINCTION, MERIT etc. But what for and in what, education, religious? Will keep looking.

Thank you again everybody for trying. I am still waiting for the lad to come back to me with his mums lineage, so at the moment I cannot say exactly where he was from. As soon as I find out I will post it.

Thanks
Tom

I think the Daniel W Murphy born in Plympton is a different one as he is in the Royal Field Artillery (his father, also Daniel, was a gunner too).
