Marriage look up please Turner/Crann, Leeds 1858-61.
« on: Wednesday 04 June 14 17:07 BST (UK) »
Can anyone find the marriage of Jane Crann, born 1819 and William Turner, born 1816 please?

It would have been between 1858, when she was still Jane Crann (when present at her Fathers death) and 1861 when she was Jane Turner on the census.

Jane was a Dressmaker and William an Ale Brewer.

She would have married in Leeds and most of the family used The parish church St Peters but I cannot be sure of this.

Thank you for looking.

Was she christened at St Peter Leeds on 13th Dec 1819 parents named James & Mary?

Mmm....not seeing a match on FreeBMD or Yorkshire BMD between 1851 and 1861 for a
Jane Crann to William Turner ???

There's two marriage entries on Yorkshire BMD at St Peter Leeds for a

Jane Crann to Benjamin Swales in 1850 and to a John Nettleton in 1861

Do you know who William's parents were?

There's a christening 15 Apr 1816 at St Peter Leeds parents named Robert & Sarah

I'm wondering if there is a problem with unclear references here.

There is a marriage Oct/Nov/Dec 1861, Leeds, ref 9b 530, which has Jane Crann. There is obviously something wrong as it has 3 grooms and 2 brides listed.
Then there is a marriage also Oct//Nov/Dec 1861, also Leeds, ref 9b 590 (so very similar). This has 4 names, so appears in order, 2 are men including a William Turner, 1 is female, and the fourth is called Hartwig, which is unclear!
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Looks as if Mary Rawlings is the missing bride

(Mary Rawlings - Dec 1861 Leeds ref 9b 520 2 female 1 male)

From Yorkshire BMD has these 1861 marriages at St Peter Leeds

Jane CRANN married John NETTLETON
(FreeBMD postem added says his father is William Nettleton)

Maria KIDD married John CLUDERAY
(FreeBMD postem added to say they married each other)

George WILKINSON married Mary RAWLINGS

missing bride for Hartwig is Martha Sutcliffe ref 9b page 570 3 females 2 males
missing bride for William Pickles is Jane Turner ref 9b page 593 2 females 1 male

from Yorkshire BMD 1861 marriage at Leeds Registered Buildings
William TURNER married Selina HARTLEY
Hartwig LAZARUS married Martha SUTCLIFFE
William PICKLES married Jane TURNER

Could you please confirm the name of Jane's father this may help others especially if her marriage is  available to view on line and also if known what was his occupation

Thank you.

Yes, this is the Jane who was Christened on 13 Dec 1819, Leeds, St Peter.
Parents are James and Mary Crann.

The marriages to John Nettleton and Benjamin Swales were different Jane Cranns, although both on my family tree.

Unfortunately I don't know who Williams parents were, I hoped finding the marriage would tell me.

Jane seems to have had quite an unfortunate life. She was with both her father and brother when they died and she took in her brothers children after his death, She married quite late in life and her husband (William Turner) died in 1870. She ended up in the Workhouse in her 80s.

I wonder if she never got around to actually getting married, although she did take on the Turner name!

Forgot to mention, her father, James Crann, was a Hairdresser.
