WW1 Royal Engineer
« on: Monday 24 March 14 15:26 GMT (UK) »
I'm researching Henry Mariner who served with the Royal Engineers.  He was killed on 12.9.1915 at Gallipolli and is buried at Beach Cemetery.  His service no. is 82891.  Solders Died Gt War states that he was 134th A.T. Fortress Company.

What I'd like to know is what the "A.T." stands for?

Wright (West Ham, Stratford, Cripplegate)

Swain (Cripplegate, St Lukes)
Wolfe (St Giles in the Fields)
Willis (Gt. Leighs; Brentford)
Bryant (Bristol, Glos)
Searle (Kent/Surrey)
Keyworth (Yorkshire)
Biggs (Harrow Weald)
Collins (Harrow Weald and Wiltshire)
Langston (Harrow Weald)

Thank you Ady.

Do you know at all what Fortress Company did?  I noticed somewhere that another part of the RE were called Field Company.  I was wondering if they had different roles and what they were.  I might be wrong but I think there were only 2 other RE's who died that day in Gallipolli so I'm wondering what they were doing.

Can some-one help me please. I found what may be my Grt. Uncle's WW1 Record. But I can not decipher it completely. It reads NC Cys RE, and his service number. Can anyone tell me what this means?

Can you give us his name so we can look at the record?

Thanks to you both. My mistake, as usual. His name is William H. Thompson, b.1874 and died 1957 of Blairgowrie, Perthshire. Parents Edward and Helen (Ellen) Thompson, wife Sarah. The service number is 297294 in the year 1917. I did search ancestry.uk but the image(s) were blank, all 18 of them. I have contacted them re. Thanks for your help.
