Anne (McGranahan) McMenamin, (1847-1911ff) Egglybane, Donegal (born Tyrone)
« on: Wednesday 12 February 14 12:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am wondering if anyone can help me find more information on my great-great grandmother, Anne McGranahan? I have posted this in the Donegal section but also here, as Anne was born in Tyrone.

She was born in Tyrone in about 1847 (according to 1911 census) and married Hugh McMenamin (date unknown).

By 1911 she was widowed, living in Egglybane, Cloghard, Donegal. She had a large family, with children Michael, Hugh, Patrick, Sarah, Daniel (my great grandfather), Mary Anne and Charles McMenamin. All of these children were also born in Tyrone (just across the border with Egglybane).

My grandmother recalls her father mentioning a link between Anne and the McGranahans that were involved in the assassination of Lord Leitrim in 1879 (Anthony and Bernard McGranahan, among others), but I have no hard evidence of this.

Is there a way to find out more about Anne McMenamin (nee McGranahan)? Was she related to the McGranahans of Fandad (Gortnatraw I believe)? What I really need is birth details for Anne, so I can find her parents/siblings.

Many thanks to anyone who has any ideas.

Hi, thanks for the prompt replies!!!

@aghadowe: Thanks, I have those ones already, also via FamilySerach and the 1911 census. I don't think that James is directly related at least, but thanks anyway.

@kingskerswell: Looks great, may I ask where you found this information? I am guessing that Castlederg must have been Anne's home parish. It's very very close to Egglybane so that's a good fit.

Does anyone know if the birth records for Tyrone/Donegal are extant? Hopefully finding her parents will help me determine if there is a link with the (many) McGranahans of Fanad.

Civil registration of births started in 1864 and all civil records survive.

Since marriages usually take place in bride's church, Castlederg would be the place to start searching for other records.
