Re: Glassford OPR Burial Records/MIs or Strathaven

I'm looking for these families in surrounding areas.

A James CRAIG and Jean BROUN might be buried there with almost certainly a child - James born 1749. JC senior and JB would be buried after 1758 when they had their last child, another James (buried in 1834 at Blantyre).

Does anyone know where the John Hamilton of Collinhill families are buried? I think it must be Strathaven.

Thanks for any help. Those people with cd records are a HUGE help for those of us who won't be in Scotland for a long time, if ever.

Morning Folks
Just going over older posts from the Glassford /Strathaven area and looking for connections. So I'll post this and see if my Sinclairs connect solidly to any Allan's in the area. I am hoping that Avondale is near Glassford  and Strathaven.
On January 27, 1865, John Sinclair, only son of James and Margaret Sinclair, married Margaret Marshall in the parish of Avondale in the County of Lanark (sourced record). The 1881 Census indicated they were living in South Greenock at 25 Bruce Street and had 6 children- James Marshall Sinclair born on the 13th September, 1869, Robert Crozier Sinclair born April 7th  1876,  John Sinclair born December 8th ,1871,  Archibald Allan Sinclair born April 21st , 1874, Annie Allan Sinclair born March 3rd , 1878, and Jane Menzies Sinclair born  May 13th ,1880 was 10 months old. All the children were born in Greenock, Renfrew with the exception of the eldest James who was born in Avondale Lanark. ( sourced record). The addition of the Allan name to 2 of the children’s names comes from the Marshall side of the family. Specifically Margaret Marshall’s mother (also a Margaret Marshall) was an Allan before she was married; ergo you have Archibald Allan and Annie Allan.
John Sinclair was also a mason.
Hoping to make connections.

Hi Janet Mc,

There is nothing in the Glassford or Stonehouse MIs for James Craig & Jean Brown.
In the burial records for Avondale there are 2 entries -

ANDREW HAMILTON, Colen Hill, buried on 28th February 1843, in the 2.
JOHN HAMILTON, Cotton Hill, buried 16th December 1825, in the 1.

I suspect that "Cotton Hill" is a badly written Colen Hill. (Or whatever is should have been).
The 1 & 2 refer to lairs within the family plot.

Someone may have photographs of headstones from Strathaven burial ground (Avondale parish burial ground). Sancti perhaps?

Hope this helps a little,

Lodger

Wonderful - that is 'my' Hamilton's.

John was married to Elizabeth Cochran - she might have died quite a lot earlier. Anything about her?
Andrew was his son and he is the brother to 'my' Mary Hamilton who married a Robert Craig. We haven't found where she is buried (post 1841) but could be there. Any Mary Hamilton Craig (she possibly married again too). Her husband, Robert Craig of Blantyre died unexpectedly in 1826 and I haven't found his burial either.

Now John's father was an Andrew and he died in 1773 (also of Collinhill/Colin hills - not Colen or Cotton!). That Andrew was married to a Janet Craig.

Janet Craig's father was an Andrew Craig who would have died in early 1740's.

Andrew's parents were John Hamilton and Janet Leiper (the JH died ? before 1740).

Another John Hamilton and Janet ? died between 1715-19 and all these were of 'Colinhill'. Are any of these on the records?

Before this the family seems to have come from Chapelton or Glassford.
Thank you so much for your help.

Checked again for all the names you listed but no joy I'm afraid.

I have a list of Strathaven people who served in the great war. One entry matches your family.

JACK HAMILTON, Colinhill, Highland Light Infantry.

That's all, sorry!  (Jack = John).

Rodeo,

I was in Glassford a couple of years ago. I took a photo of one Paterson grave at the old cemetery. You might find it useful.
