What were his parents thinking?
« on: Monday 06 October 14 11:55 BST (UK) »
Yesterday while looking at my many hints on ancestry I came across this;

RG 9/3206/ 35 p 4

I thought the transcription was wrong so I went to look at the original image.

I wonder what his parents were thinking?!

His name is his mother's maiden name.

Poor child, I wonder if he used another name in later life - have you found him in the next census?

Added: I see he married under that name and is in the electoral registers, so it can't have bothered him too much.  ;D

I'm still going through the many hints ancestry has found for me.

I don't yet know how he links into my family.  I am very slowly working my way through all the hints ancestry has found for me.  One day I may get through them all, there are thousands!

I wonder what his parents were thinking?!

His name is his mother's maiden name.

Sorry to spoil the fun, but I suspect they were thinking that it had become a tradition to use a family surname as a forename, and as they hadn't yet used that one, perhaps they should.

They probably didn't give a thought to the fact that 100 years or so later someone would use the same word to refer to someone who was deranged or eccentric. (First recorded use 1958 - source Oxford English Dictionary) The related use of "nuts" was only first recorded in 1908. And if you're thinking of the connection with his surname, "barking [mad]" wasn't recorded until 1960.

So, no reason whatsoever to think of him as a "poor child". All this shows is that times change, and you can't judge previous generations by the standards of today.
