Robert Benjamin Garrod Ipswich
« on: Tuesday 11 November 14 18:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I'm looking for info on Robert Garrod, my great grandfather. He died in 1941 aged 53 and might have been a gunner in RMA - service record 15980.
Thanks
Michele :)

Hi

He died in Salford Lancs but was b 1887 Ipswich

There is no WW1 service record for him but over 60% of such records were burnt during the WW2 blitz

I can find a Medal Roll Index entry for a Robert B Garrod but the service number does not correspond to what you give above

That Robert was in the Royal Engineers service numbers 201701 and WR 260414

His rank was shown as L/Cpl   and he was awarded  the British and Victory medals

;D Thanks both. That was quick! Wasn't expecting any replies at all.
Carole – Did you mean that my relative was a L/Cpl? I have his medals here which I've had identified (albeit now needing more research!) Do you know the best place to get his service record?
He is buried at Agecroft in Salford in a now unmarked plot. My Nana was called Mabel Blanche.

Your Nana was the youngest of 3
Maud M L Garrod sep qtr 1913
Herbert J Garrod sep qtr 1916
Mabel Blanche Garrod march 1923
so this begs the question - do you notice 1916 - 1923 between births ...surely Robert Benjamin Garrod fought in WW1 as well ??...might be worth looking for a WW1 service record too ?

;D Yes this is the right family. I have a small amount of census info. I have a WW1 medal and several WW2 medals. I've been told that the WW1 medal is part of a broken set and I should try and find the rest although I wouldn't know where to start with that. I also have a WW2 set which again is mounted wrongly.
