Hercules WRIGHT Chelsea Pensioner

Hi all
        I am interested to see if there is any information on a Hercules Wright born around 1818 in Sandhurst Berkshire?  I believe he may have been a Chelsea Pensioner. If so there may be some information on him.  He married in 1847 London and their 1st child was born in the United States 1852  3rd child born in Sandhurst 1859 which seems he may have been a pensioner before 1847.

His discharge papers are viewable on FindMyPast. He was a sapper in the Royal Engineers, served 1839-1860 including nearly 5 years in Bermuda and 9 years in Halifax Nova Scotia.

There are press reports in August 1860 of Hercules Wright of the Royal Engineers receiving a testimonial from the Humane Society for saving several people from drowning at Aldershot.

                Thank you so much for your information.  His second child was born in Halifax so it all fits together.  The information on Findmypast seems interesting but I am not a paid up member.  Also the press reports you mentioned can I look at those on the web?

You can find press reports about him on Findmpast. Alternatively via the British Newspaper Archive which does a one month sub. One of the press articles is in the Gale/NL 19th century newspaper database which may be viewable foc via your local library membership, depending where you live.

1871 Enock WRIGHT  is down as born c 1867, image is age 17, so born c 1854, Binfield.

Hi trish
           Yes she did remarry Hercules.  According to Binfield's christening records there wasn't a Hannah.  Louisa had 2 children after Charles died.  They took the name Wright in a census. Louisa had 3 more children with Hercules.   The Enoch mentioned was my great grandfather who emigrated to Australia in 1874 and had the name Carter on his marriage certificate.  I have all the information I can get on Louisa which is why I am chasing Hercules.  He had 3 children with his 1st wife.  According to the marriages of the children of Louisa and Charles they took the name Carter.

You may have to get the 1847 M/C to establish more about Hercules Father Robert, eg Occp. Witnesses at the Marriage may help also.

There appears to be only 1 Family Group of Wrights in Sandhurst in 1841 Census.
Headed by Charles born 1775 Foreign Parts. He is down as Occp Army.
So it is possible your Wrights originate from elsewhere than Berkshire.
