CRAVEN Marcus - arrival in Australia 1851-55
« on: Thursday 24 July 14 12:53 BST (UK) »

I’m looking for the arrival of Marcus CRAVEN in Australia sometime between 1851 & 1855

In the 1851 English census (March 30) he was living with his father & siblings in the house of his brother-in-law James COURTNEY in St George Hanover Square

By about 1855 he was publican of the Commercial Hotel in Benalla in NE Victoria
He married in Benalla in 1857.

His obituary in The North Eastern Ensign 28 Oct 1884 says that he had been in Benalla “upwards of 30 years”.

His brother Alfred CRAVEN arrived as an unassisted passenger on the Ben Nevis in Jan 1853.

I can’t find Marcus CRAVEN on Victorian passengers lists online. The assisted index includes 1851, the unassisted index only begins in 1852.  It is possible that Marcus arrived in late 1851.

Can someone find his arrival please, or narrow down the arrival window.

Thanks
Barb

Are you searching for first name as well, this can lead you up the wrong path as many entries have the prefix Mr or Mrs. Do you know if he married prior to leaving.

There is an entry of a Mr & Mrs Craven arriving NSW in 1854. from London as unassisted immigrants.

Also a couple with a young girl. None to Victoria it seems.

Seems a much more likely candidate. At least the years add up! Still doesn't give the initial entry though?

Thanks everyone

I am fairly sure that the  "missing friends" message found by Cando in the Argus of 1 Dec 1853 p1 is  from the Marcus CRAVEN I am researching. This has really reduced the time interval for his arrival in Aust.
As others suggested Marcus may well have disembarked in another port in Tas, NSW, SA.

The Launceston Examiner reported on his death which seems odd as he lived in NE country Victoria for all those years.  It suggests that he had some link with Launceston. The CRAVEN on the 1852 passenger lists to and from Launceston may well have been him.

As always I am astonished by what RootsChatters can find.

Thanks
Barb
