Hawkers Licenses ?
« on: Wednesday 02 September 09 19:05 BST (UK) »
I wonder; Were these issued by the local Police, as were Pedallers Licenses ?

Either way; Would any, accessible, record exist of who they were issued too ?

Much obliged for any information. Thanks  :)

A hawker was a travelling salesman or pedlar. In 1888 hawkers were legally distinguished from pedlars by the ruling that pedlars travelled on foot, hawkers by horse or beast of burden.
A hawker is a man who travels about selling goods with a horse and cart or van. A pedlar carries his goods himself..The cost of a pedlar's licence was 5s., and was granted by the police. Hawkers' licences were granted by the Inland Revenue, and cost £2

By an Act of 50 Geo. 3, c. 41, Hawkers and Pedlars had to take out a license, annually, at the cost of £4. If they travelled with a horse, ass or other beast of burden, there was an additional £4 for each animal employed.
Every Hawker had to have inscribed on every box, pack, case, trunk, cart etc., "Licensed Hawker". It was proposed to abolish the Hawkers Licence in the 1888 budget, but after opposition it was reduced to £2.

 Cheers, Stan  :)

Issued by the Inland Revenue? I suppose that means there's precious little hope of records existing then? What a bummer! They'd be gold dust!

In 1872, Australia, newsarticle stated that Hawkers license forms were available at the newspaper office  ;D
Not sure if that is any help.  :-\

Unfortunately, Margaret; I'd imagine that the old, 'White five pound notes' were still available at the local bank, in those days.

I'd get an old fashioned look if I went there asking for one today though   ;D
