Please can anyone help me with a mystery - a family bible was passed down to me by my grandfather Reginald Stray who died in 1999 - he told me it had been in his family for many generations. in the front cover are the names of peter and Harriot Allen and their children
William 1/11/1792
Harriot 26/9/1794 - 16/3/1800
Peter 14/11/1796
Ann 21/10/1798 - 30/10/1798
Charles 4/5/1800
Henry 20/7/1802
Mary Ann 19/3/1805
Frederick 15/6/1807

and at the back the names of George and Jane barton and their children
George Robert 23/9/1822
Jane 9/11/1824
Mary Ann 13/12/1826
Charles 22/4/1828
Elizabeth Agnew 2/6/1830
Fanny Rebecca 6/8/1832

and a newspaper cutting relating to the death of George the 4th in 1830

the mystery is how this is connected to my family as I can find no Bartons or Allens despite researching back all lines on my grandfather's side - I have so far found - CROXSON, STRAY, NEWMAN, COLE, NEWMAN, BRIDGER, TAYLOR, HARPER, WARD, HEWITT, AUSTIN, ALBERY and  SUTTON  but cannot see how this links

I did find on an old american forum a question about the marriage of a Thomas Croxson to a Mary Ann barton but have been unable to find evidence of this

I have traced some of the Bartons through 1871 and 1881 censuses and some marriages for the men but still no link
my grandfather was from portsmouth and the bartons seem to have been from alverstoke and portsea

any help or suggestions gratefully received

Hello Nikki

Have also found all the Allen children, all born Chichester Sussex.

But this is interesting  ;)

MARY ANN ALLEN   Birth:  1805   Chichester West, , Sussex, England

 Death:  19 MAY 1845

 Father:  PETER ALLEN  Family
 Mother:  HARRIET GROVER

You get mums maiden name too.

Could they have been on his wifes side and not his?

I'll have a think about this,while I'm getting dinner.

Hi Nikki,

George R Barton was a tailor and ale house keeper at the Red Lion in Ryde on the Isle of Wight by 1861.  His wife was a dressmaker.  Charles Barton was also a tailor in Portsea in 1861.

While Portsea and Portsmouth are separate parishes and Alverstoke is over the other side of the harbour, you should not rule out any connection.  Portsmouth grew so much as a town that by 1900 it had swamped the naval/dockyard area of Portsea.  The whole area was quite a close community.

Can you take both your grandfather's parents' lines back to the turn of the 18th/19th century? Are there any missing?  The connection may be in one of the female lines.

Nell

George Barton (1798-1847) was my GGGGrandfather. He married Jane Colenutt (1793-?) on 9th Dec 1821 at St Mary's Portsea. They had 7 children, George Robert Barton was the eldest (1823-1861).
GR Barton married Betsey Shiner (1823-?) 11th Jan 1846 at Alverstoke.
Other names associated with this family are: Riddett (from IOW) and Peill(from Kent)
I do have more details of this family if it is of any use to you let me know.
How they come to have a reference in your bible is a real mystery from the Barton side too, it appears.

Hello - I just came across your post after becoming very interested in my family history recently and wonder if you have got to the bottom of this mystery yet? - Allens and Bartons.

I am related to Peter and Harriott Allen via their son Charles (born 1800). Charles would be my great x 4 grandfather. I was amazed to hear via your posts that there is a bible in existence with their names in it!! I have a lot of information from Charles through to present day which makes extremely interesting reading and brings up many names..although so far I have found nothing relating to anyone called Barton.

I would love to know more if you have it. I see that the last post relating to this was a while back so this may be a longshot. Thanks anyway.

Clair

I have sent you a private message asking for your email address so I can send you a photo of the bible cover. I am very interested how the Riddetts fit in as that is a name on my husband's side which is amazing!
