I saw this first thing this morning, but didn't have time to comment.

My thoughts were, and still are, that it's a romanticised view of Windsor Castle  :)

I'm pretty sure it is Windsor, I thought that before I found the image.

Thank you all so very much.  It actually is not that important in the greater scheme of things, but just always piqued my curiosity.

My grandfather bought the plate in the early 1900's at a hotel auction in Cape Town. He spotted it amongst standard white hotel plates and bid on the lot getting it for 10 shillings.  He then gave away all the white plates to everyone standing around.  When the hotel owner realized  what my grandfather had found he immediately tried to buy it back.  Obviously this did not work as I am now the proud owner of it  :D

Sorry, I'm not convinced that it is Windsor either.

Another possibility is Arundel, if viewed from the right angle.  This one is sort of from the right (possible) place:

However, this castle too has been heavily restored.

Windsor did not always look like it does now - the shape of the buildings was radically altered in the 1820s.  If the picture on the plate depicted the castle two centuries ago, there could well be a disparity, apart from the romanticised aspect.

The other possibility is that it could a completely imaginary castle!

You're right, it might well be Arundel Castle, viewed across the River Arun.

Lots of photos for comparison here http://flickrhivemind.net/Tags/arundel,castle/Interesting

I must say that my magnifying glass has not had this much use in ages!  Arundel Castle looks like a much better bet than Windsor Castle does.

I know that this is a dessert plate, and that the set consisted of 'castles' in the centre, but I have not been able to find a list of the castles used.

The only thing that concerns me about Arundel, is that if you Google Arundel and Coalport I don't think anything comes up, whereas Windsor and Coalport does produce examples.

My first thoughts were Windsor, Warwick or Arundel. Looking at pics of all three, Arundel looks likely but given that some artistic licence has probably been used, so does Windsor.

Any chance of a photo of the Coalport mark and the numbers you mention etc on the reverse? Might help pin this down.
