Joseph Waterworth Parr Flat, Parr, Lancashire
« on: Thursday 31 July 14 00:22 BST (UK) »
Hello there, I am not expecting to resolve this brick wall however before I stop at the wall, I thought that I would throw the net out one more time.

Joseph Waterworth b.9 Apr 1850, Parr Flat Parr, illegitimate, Lancashire, to Sarah Waterworth single mother. Sarah goes back with Joseph,to live with her parents ( see 1851 census Parr) James and Mary (nee Mercer) at Parr Flat.

By 1853 she has married Thomas Peak and went on to have 5 children:

Catherine Peak b. 1853,
Mary Jane b. 1855
Thomas b. abt 1858
Samuel b. abt 1869
Isaac b. abt 1871

In 1855, recorded in the Baptisms Parish Records of Burtonwood, Sarah (Waterworth) Peak has daughter Mary Jane baptised.  Parents name Thomas & Sarah Peak AND ALSO  Joseph Waterworth  illegitimate, parents Sarah Waterworth and John Robinson. I have tried to trace John Robinson however no luck and so I am wondering if Sarah has found someone to give his name, so that she could have Joseph baptized. At this point I must add that Joseph never lived with the Peak family. He stayed with his grandparents and thought his uncle & aunts were his brothers and sisters, until such time that all was revealed to him.

Now to oral family history, no hoo hooing as we have all heard this one before. "Sarah was working as a servant in an aristocratic family and fell pregnant to the ...take your pick,...squire, man of the house, the brother, the son etc."  It is someone of great wealth. Having said that there are quite a few Manor Houses around the Parr area. If anyone out there can actually find a John Robinson with an attachment to Sarah and son Joseph I would be thrilled. I know that it is more likely to be the footman, stable boy etc. however I have come to realise that there is always "some" truth in oral family history. Joseph began his life as a boy in the mines, advanced himself to underlooker and ended up being manger of 2-3 coal mines in West Leigh, he also stood for local council.

The fact that Joseph rose up through the ranks while all his uncle and aunts's children stayed in the mines together with the Peak children, does  perhaps gives sway to him having different genes?? I have a great deal of information regarding his later life however I am trying to crack who his father was.

Yours in hope
Jenny

Is this record connected to the family?

Baptism: 7 Jun 1835 St Michael and All Angels, Burtonwood, Lancashire, England
Harriet Peak - [Child] of Thomas Robinson & Mary Peak, Spinster
Born: 10 May
Abode: [Father:] Penketh [Mother:] Burtonwood
Occupation: Labourer
Notes: Illegitimate
Baptised by: W. G. Thomas

 ???

Looking at the baptism records for Burtonwood - these Robinson men seemed to have a lot of children with single women!

Hi Heather, thanks for your reply. I have not traced back any further on the Peak side other than Thomas Peak b. 1818, Burtonwood. Given that Thomas Peak was born in 1818 Burtonwood and is 12 years older than Sarah Waterworth he may have fathered Harriet Peak when he was 17 years. I don't have a marriage for Sarah with a John Robinson nor with Thomas Peak.

Hi Garstonite, no I didn't know about Ester. They may have moved to Haydock as this is where Joseph married Sarah Owen. I also have this record taken from: "List of the Victims of The Wood Pit Explosion Haydock", 1878. You will note Sarah Peak

47. Thomas Waterworth, 12 years.
Of New Boston, Haydock who was employed as a balancer. He was identified by Sarah Peak whose son was still in the mine. Thomas was her brother's son and was buried with his father, Edward (No.22) and his brother, Henry (No.112) at St. Thomas', Ashton, 13th June.

Hello Gastonite, I have just taken a look at my family research program Legacy and I have recorded that in the census of 1891 Thomas & Sarah had have living with them their married son Samuel, 22 years of age & his wife 24 years old.

Hiya Jenny - I wasn`t implying that Mary / Samuel / Isaac weren`t the children of Thomas and Sarah - I was pointing out that their baptism records weren`t at St Michaels , Burtonwood - so I presume they were baptised at another church ....

I don't have a marriage for Sarah with a John Robinson nor with Thomas Peak.
Lancs opc have this marriage which I suspect is the one you need.
25 Dec 1853 St Mary the Virgin, Prescot, Lancashire, England
Thomas Pike Full Labourer, Bachelor, Parr
Sarah Waterworth Full, Spinster, Parr
    Groom's Father Thomas Pike, Labourer
    Bride's Father James Waterworth, Labourer
    Witness: Thos. Jones; Ann Gill,
Married by Banns by: S. Cavan
Both signed with a cross so it's possible that the registrar wrote Pike instead of Peak because that's what he thought he heard.
You can see this record for yourself here.
