Coal Mining

Hi,

I have a little question coming from looking at the Peak District Mines Historical Society Limited List of Mines 1896.

There is a list of mines, in a table, with headings.  One of the headings is Workers.  Under is split in to 2 separate columns, headed 'U/G' and the other 'Sur'.   Does the first mean under ground? and if not, does anyone know what it does mean and can anyone tell me what the Sur means please?
