Registration numbers
« on: Tuesday 05 August 14 16:47 BST (UK) »

What does  the Registration Number mean on the Scottish Census results?   I think it it might be the number given to a town or district - but WHEN is it put against a name?   Is it when they are born there or if they move into that district?   Is it possible to trace a person through a number?
Can anyone enlighten me?

Do you mean registration district number eg RD 32/2 would be Flotta, Orkney pre 1972?  If so, the whole list of registration district and parish numbers is here - http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/list-of-parishes-registration-districts.html

Re-Registration numbers:

That is the information I was looking for but can you tell me if the number refers to where a person was born or only refers to where they lived when the census was taken?
Thanks

The registration number defines locations for the census. The people listed for each specific location would be those present in the dwelling on the night the census was taken. It would be possible for someone to be living at that address but not be documented on the census form for that location if they were away from home at the time, e.g., working or visiting relatives. For censuses after 1841 place of birth will also be documented on the form.

The numbers in the census refer only to where people were when the census was taken.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
