Very interesting thread!

A snippet from 'The Press' in "Papers Past" dated 1.6.1877 re James McGowan, deceased.

Law Notices........."For order for leave to issue Probate to James Eaton and Paul McColl, as executors named".

Hi again...

A few guesses from the Ireland censuses to throw into the mix.

Make sure you click on the "Show All Information" box

MAGOWAN - Ballyworken (Portadown Rural, Armagh)

If the following Mary Jane MAGOWAN is actually the mother of your James Ingram McGOWAN then the son John, born in "Canterbury, Newzealand" may well be the following birth listed on the BDM NZ website...

1867/21485 - McGOWAN, John - mother: Mary Jane  father: James - d.o.b 2 Jan 1867

If so it means there is a four year migration-to-NZ window for James McGOWAN and Mary Jane m.s INGRAM, namely from the 23 Jan 1863 marriage mentioned by Ambly in Reply #17 to the 2 Jan 1867 birth of John McGOWAN.

1901

Mary Jane MAGOWAN doesn't appear in the following 1911 census which would tie in with the 1902 Armagh death for Mary Jane McGOWAN mentioned in Reply #16

What intriguing information. i don't have the time during the week to glean through (gone 12 h day at work), but at first blush thoughts are: John might be a brother of James. James Ingram went on to be a farmer in Canada and we firmly have him in Canada by the 1901 census onwards. He may well have gone over to Ireland to marry. But John is firmly in Ireland.

Odd that the plasterer had intention to marry Bridget O'shea and then married Margaret Shea???

Will look a bit more at the end of the day.
Many many thanks

Hi again...

Forgot to emphasise the following...don't buy any of the BDM NZ certificates I mentioned.

For the moment your next step should only be starting a new look-up thread for the two probates, something along the lines of ...

"Christchurch Archives probate look-up please - McGOWAN"

...and include the following two links

McGOWAN James - 1877
http://archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=22383749

McGOWAN Mary Jane - Greenpark & Ireland - Widow - 1903
http://archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=22388825

Christchurch Archives isn't visited as much as Wellington Archives but patience is a virtue :-) Eventually someone will do the look-up for you. Once you get to see the Wills and Affadvits you can decide whether or not to purchase printouts of the certificates from BDM NZ. Printouts are scans of the Registers, not transcriptions, so there's no chance of human error. Plus a printout is six dollars cheaper than a certificate :-)

-----

Might also be worth starting a new thread on the Ireland board. Post the two MAGOWAN census links from Reply #19 and ask the Irish rootschatters if they can expand on them. There's nothing like local knowledge.

Regards
Beg

Extraordinary information!! I am becoming a believer that the below Mary Jane and James McGowan are the parents of James Ingram and a brother John, as you have shown back in Ireland.

I have 2 grandmothers whose birth years in multiple records were both off by 4-5 years, however both birth month and days were correct. I feel James Ingram might not have known or remembered his exact birthdate.

Thanks for all you help.

Hi again...

Just playing around with the Ireland census info. All guesswork so take it with a grain of salt. :-)

-----

I reckon the Mary Jane ROBINSON of Drumnacanvy (Carrowbrack, Armagh) is the mother-in-law of your James Ingram McGOWAN

Here is her 1868 marriage to Thomas ROBINSON. Mentions the respective fathers, which is helpful.

Thomas ROBINSON to Mary Jane ENGLAND
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGZT-554

The 1911 census mentions that she has had ten children. Most of them can be found on the FamilySearch website, including a Mary Jane ROBINSON who (I think) was the wife of your James Ingram McGOWAN.

Unfortunately FamilySearch says Mary Jane ROBINSON's birth date was 10 April 1876 which disagrees with the 1901 Canadian census. But the same Canadian census also has what I think is the wrong birthdate for your James Ingram McGOWAN...so who knows.

Like I said, just playing around. Grain of salt :-)

The only immigration or emigration record that seemed remotely familiar was "the plasterer." Again, I don't think James Ingram Magowan/McGowan's father was the plasterer. As James Ingram was always a farmer, I think his father was a farmer.

I could not find Mary or Mary Jane McGowan emigrating from NZ back to Ireland or James Ingram. I guess the best hope is waiting for Mary Jane's probate. I am curious--if Mary died in Ireland why would her probate be in NZ?

Do the Foot Notes indicate Mary's father deceased or both father's deceased!
I think also, LURGAN RO means : The Registry Office in Lurgan Parish.

Hi Alleson,
pm me your email addy to me and I will send details of the above.
Cheers
AMBLY

Ambly, This is such a good candidate for Violet's parents, but I wonder about this James Ingram Magowan's father as a Coachman. If the James and Mary Jane in NZ were the parents of this groom, they were farmers not a Coachman. Does this marriage record give any other details?

Thanks a bunch,
Alleson
