Kyo West House
« on: Friday 06 June 14 08:03 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out about Kyo West House in Co Durham.  My grandmother was born there in 1893 and all I can find on the internet is one photograph, taken in snow.  It looks as if it might have been a farmhouse, but I'd be grateful if anyone has information about the house.

Thank you!  :)

It is Kyo West Houses according to the 1920 map which you can see at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=417043,552138
Also on the 1898 map at http://www.durhamrecordoffice.org.uk/Pages/AdvancedSearchMapSeries.aspx?layer=2 Select New Kyo from the drop down list.

The heads of the three families occupying Kyo West Houses in the 1881 census are an Engine Stoker, Labourer at Coke Yard, and a Master Butcher, so they appear to be just ordinary houses, and not a farm.  RG11 Piece 4942 Folio 92  Page 12
The photograph seems to have been taken fron the south east

Thanks so much for this information, Stan.  Is any information available about the families in the 1891 census?

Thanks, Stan.  Looks like there were four separate households at Kyo West Houses.  I wonder if they were all rented from the same landlord...  The earliest my family would have lived there would have been April 1893 after returning from America.  By 1897, they were living at Bell's Place, Kyo.

Regards,
Foffie

According to the census it is probably Bell's Buildings in West Kyo which you can see marked on the 1970-1975 map at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=416941,552316
