Overseas GRO

Would someone be kind enough to check the overseas births for me at 1837online for

Eliza A Shorter born Gibralter circa 1874

I would like to order her birth certificate.

More than happy to do a census look up in return.

Apologies for hi jacking this thread, but I wonder if anyone can tell me how to order an overseas certificate from the GRO. I have tried on-line and it doesn't work

I have ordered the birth certificate, so I think the question is why doesn't it work for you?
You probably need to state how precisely you are making the order - i.e. what reference details are you giving to try to obtain the certificate.

To clarify,  I am giving the details I was given when I asked for a lookup, the type, place and volume and page number ;

     Deaths, Ionian Islands 1818- 1865
    Corfu vol 8 p 25

However I can't get the on line form to accept it

        No doubt I am making some silly mistake

Jane, is that the reference as it was given to you?

What you need as well as the volume and page number is the exact year the event was registered and the quarter - you seem to have a year range and no quarter.

           I would have thought the same about the year and quarter but I was assured this was all that was in the index..
                     As this is my first encounter with Overseas references I am not sure what to do to check...

No you only get a range in most overseas indexes because basically there are not going to be all that many registrations in anyone year in for instance the Ionian Islands - the whole index 1818-1865 is only one volume and if my memory serves me right not a particularly thick volume at that.

So when in doubt you need to follow the frequently asked questions on the GRO website and hopefully following the instructions will work for you.

'Q9. What happens if I don't know the year of registration of an overseas birth, marriage or death?

Don't worry, insert the year that the event may have taken place, more than one year will be searched.

Q10. What happens if I don't know where the overseas birth, marriage or death occurred?

When you get to the place of birth, marriage or death, type 'unknown'; a search will then be made throughout the overseas indexes. Unfortunately if you do not know the place of event, we may not be able to narrow down the search to just one entry. '

However you do know where so not an issue.

Corfu volume 8 page 25

will be enough information for them to find it - when they say they will search for it in more than one year that means they can do that because the numbers in the index are so small they can whip through quite a number of years, something impossible for them to try in the domestic volumes.
