What is a "Girdle smith"
« on: Saturday 04 October 14 14:25 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I'm doing some transcribing for FreeReg and have come across the following entry for Romaldkirk in N. Yorks for September 1714 (Burials).
What was a "Girdle smith"?
Lots of ludicrous images come to mind!

Regards
Keith

I think I may have answered my own question.
A Girdler made leather belts (amongst other things) especially for the Army.
But if anyone has a better idea, I would be grateful.

A girdle can also be a griddle/gridiron, so that may be more likely as he is a smith, cb

I agree with Clayton. When I was growing up we cooked dropped scones on a "girdle".

Thanks Stan, Clayton and Craclyn,
your suggestions are far more likely than mine.
Stan, thanks also for the link to Nottingham History, it looks very interesting, and I might become sidetracked!

Thanks again
