Charlotte Keiho (1811-1875)
« on: Friday 08 August 14 16:07 BST (UK) »
Sorry a bit of a cross post, but I got no joy in the London board.

Charlotte apears in 1 Jul 1832 marrying William Patrick Gahagan/Gagan (1810-1858) at St Anne Soho, London. The wedding bans show a Patrick Keiho as a witness so a brother or her father (or possibly both I suppose) is called Patrick.

I cannot seem to get anything on her before that, I wonder if Keiho is an English version of an Irish name, something Keough or something like that, does it seem likely?

It could be something like Kehoe or variant but your spelling would be just a misspelling and nothing to do with an English version of an Irish name. The bridegroom's name looks wrong as well if he was Irish. Possibly Geoghegan or some variant.

Yes - there are a lot of Keough's, but none ancestry report fall into the right time frame.

I have a range of variants from Gagan to Geoghagan in this branch, but it looks like he was literate and wrote his own name. His middle name is Patrick and that must be where I invented Patrict Keiho because I cannot find him again.

Charlotte too was literate enough to write her own name, just about.

Hi There

It would appear that both names were written phonetically.

Given that it's probable that Charlotte would have had a thick Irish brogue and married in the heart of London I would forgive the clerk for what was written.

Anyway, this leads us back to a Charlotte Keogh (or variants) born approx 1810, presumably Ireland, presumably with a father called Patrick.

I'm afraid this is too little information to work with in terms of Irish records.

Our civil records only began in 1864 so prior to that you are looking for church records.

For that you need to know an EXACT parish that Charlotte came from to see if records even still exist for that parish. Then you need both her parent's name AND her mother's maiden name.

Sorry to not have any good news for you but you may have hit the proverbial brick wall !

Tara

It is not that bad, in 1861 she gave birthplace as Middlesex.

I think the family were around a while, in 1815 a Mary Keiho married a Chas White, I wonder if this Mary was Charlottes aunty.

But I could not find any more Keiho (or Heiho) entries.

I was kind of looking for a family of Keiho/Keoughs rich in Charlottes in the 1700s in Ireland that could be the source.

This link is for a pay site but plenty of free info too.  Gives numerous variations of the surname.

What denomination are your Keihos?

From that I guess it should be Kehoe - nothing code up that way either.

I believe Charlottes great granddaughter was confirmed - so Catholic by then.
