William BUTCHER - St Osyth
« on: Monday 18 August 14 20:01 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could help me discover the parents of my 5x Great GF, William Butcher, who lived in/near St Osyth, Essex.

He was married to Elizabeth Gennery on 11 Feb 1770.

Having searched the Sy Osyth records, I found that a 'Wm and Elizabeth' had baptised 10 children ranging from 1770 to 1796.  I'm unsure on the duplicates of Wm and Susan but thats what I discovered.
Elizabeth, William, Thomas, William, Susan, William, Sarah, Susan, Mary, John (my 4x Gt GF).

Your help in this matter is very much appreciated.

Cheers

Lee

There's a William butcher born 1743 in great oakley, which is not too far away. Don't know how you would connect these though? Nothing in surrounding parishes.

If you use FreeREG and just put in the surname Butcher, then select Essex and then St Osyth from the place section it will bring up lots of Butcher's for BMD's.
regards.

Hi guys,

Thank you for your replies.  I've found that William before on Freereg too but as you say nannyj, it's being able to link them together.

The entire line up until early 1900s all lived and died in the St Osyth or Brightlingsea area.

I've been at this line on and off for over 2 years now.... just need that vital link  :-\

Cheers again,

Lee

Do you have an age at death for William?

I found all the trees with a rough dob of 1745, but having looked around all of the local parishes, the only William butcher I can see is baptised 17/1/1724 to John and Sarah butcher in great Bentley, which is very close to st osyth if you look it up on google maps. Common names ... But he did call some of his children John and Sarah? John and Sarah walstone married there in 1722. It says John was of little birch and she was of the parish.

There is a William butcher who marries a Prilea (Priscilla maybe?) salmon in little Bentley in 1725 as well, maybe a brother of John?

I was looking at circa 1745 also for his DOB.  He died in St Osyth in 1827.

Is there any websites where the Brightlingsea parish records are published or am I going to have to take a trip to Essex once I come back to the UK for a visit.  I'm currently posted in Cyprus.

Gt Bentley is in very close proximity as is Gt Oakley.  As you say, all very common names but my search continues  :)

Thunder Monkey: Brightlingsea parish registers are available to view for a fee at http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/.

I will at some point be transcribing them, both for FreeREG and for my website (which you've seen before, but I recently tarted it up a bit and added a blog) http://essexandsuffolksurnames.co.uk/
