Duncan Forbes of Culloden -His land in1895-Valuation roll help please
« on: Thursday 06 June 13 11:05 BST (UK) »
I was looking at the 1895 valuation roll and found my ancestor as a tennant in Urquhart.
The property belonged to Duncan Forbes of Culloden.
On googling him I get a scottish politician and judge 1685-1747 obviously not my man but possibly a relation.
How would I findout about the landowner i want?

Hi

A wee bit late but I've just seen your query (about an hour ago now  ;D ). I'm not sure if you've found anything about him but here's some info ~

He was a descendant of the Duncan that you found.

I went on to the Scotlands People site and looked at wills. I entered Duncan Forbes with a start date of 1895.

There is a will (5 pages) showing 23 May 1898 for Duncan Forbes of Culloden who died 8 April 1897 at Culloden House. You could obtain this for 10 credits.

His death cert shows him dying at Culloden House. Aged 75, landed proprietor.
Parents -  Duncan George Forbes, landed proprietor and Sarah, m.s. Walker, both deceased.
Cause - Heart failure, 1 day and hemiplegia, 2 years.
Informant - his cousin A Redman B Warrand of Ryfield, Connon Bridge (in 1901 showing as Alexander R B Warrand, same address, 41, lieutenant col, infantry reserve of officers and farmer, b. Nairn)

In 1891, he was living at Culloden House, Inverness:
Duncan Forbes, unmarried, 67, living private means, b. England
Louisa S G Forbes, sister in law, wid, 60, -do-, b. India
Robert D T Sherriff, visitor and cousin, mar, 53. -do-, b. India
plus 7 servants.

So far, I've not found the family in 1881.

This looks like the family in 1871
Mansion House, Inverness
Arthur Forbes, mar, 51 proprietor and land owner, b. Isle of Man
Louisa S G, wife, , 40, b. Bangalore, India
Duncan, s, unm, 20, b. Midlothian
Emily Mary Jane, d, unm, 18, b. Culloden
Duncan, brother, unm, 49, Lieut. N York Militia, b. Cumberland
Robert D F Sheriff, cousin, unm, 31, Capt, 8th Reg, b. India
plus 7 servants

In 1861 the family were living at Stratton House, Inverness.

In 1851, Duncan is living at Culloden Castle!:
Duncan Forbes, brother, unm, 29, landed proprietor, b. Cumberland

Obviously, Arthur was elsewhere.

In 1841, they're in Culloden House:
Arthur, 20, ind, b. Foreign
Duncan, 20, ind, b. England
Jos Wm, 14, ind, b. Foreign
John, 25, physician & surgeon, b. Invernessshire
John McNab, 30, preacher of the gospel, b. Foreign
John McEwen, 55, surgeon, b. Invernessshire
Ewen McEwen, 14, at school, b. Foreign
plus 3 servants

PS

There are some fairly accurate online trees which you can view via Mundia or Ancestry.

They also had a house at Bunchrew, west of Inverness, now a hotel? My gt, gramps was a keeper for one of them at an estate called Haddo, not the Earl of Aberdeen's Haddo though.

I just Googled this Haddo, it was at Inverkeithny. Now derelict, even the gatehouse where my folks lived, it's on

Named Grant from Urray but I think they originally worked for the Forbes's, possibly at Bunchrew.
