Mary Jane DICKSON

Wondering if someone can prod me in finding marriage and death for Mary Jane DICKSON.

Mary Jane DICKSON was born in 1865 Dunedin New Zealand to William and Mary Dickson.

Mary Jane was the 2nd daughter for this family.
The family moved about 1868 to the gold fields of Buller, being at Brighton and Charleston where more children were born.

I have looked and looked but must be missing something when researching.

Help appreciated.

Was the mother named Mary, nee O'FARRELL ?

There are online trees for William DICKSON / Mary O'FARRELL naming their children, and whilst Mary Jane (b. 1865) is named, there's no other info than her year of birth.

Have you got more information on this family (especially what became of Mary Jane's siblings) ?  This might assist us in finding Mary Jane.

I noticed some of the online trees stated that Mary O'FARRELL's husband was William Stewart DICKSON (although that second name doesn't appear to have been used when registering the births of their children in NZ.)  Marriage was apparently in 1861 in Australia.

Also a daughter (older than Mary Jane), Elizabeth DICKSON (b. 1862), married a Michael O'SULLIVAN.

The following obituary, for a Mrs Mary DICKSON who died at Patea, Taranaki, in 1923, may be the mother of Mary Jane DICKSON ?

If that is the case, it states that four daughters and four sons survived her.
[That accounts then for the 8 children born to a Mary and William DICKSON  who appear on the NZ Birth Index.  Of the daughters there were Elizabeth (1862) / Mary Jane (1865) / Cecilia (1878) and Caroline (1890) ... so if the obit is correct, then Mary Jane was still alive in 1923. ]

Lucy2 you are correct with William Stewart DICKSON and Mary O'FARRELL being the parents of this family.
Yes they married in 1862 in Victoria Australia and arrived before Elizabeth was born August 1862.
Mary O'Farrell according to the marriage info was born in Scariff, Co Clare. Ireland.
William Stewart DICKSON was born 1829 C. Tyrone Ireland.
Elizabeth DICKSON b. 1862 Dunedin NZ m. Michael O'Sullivan.d.1936 bur. Patea.
Elizabeth's headstone was the clue to where she was born as it was on there.

Teresa Agnes Dickson b.1864 Dunedin m. 1886 Walter Scott WELLS d.1933 bur. Patea

Yes that is Mary Dickson who died at Patea. William Stewart DICKSON d.1896 Westport.

Now not sure if Caroline fits in this family.

I have very recently found Thomas through the WW1 service information.

So it is Mary Jane DICKSON and Basil Hall DICKSON who I am now trying to find.
Basil Hall Dickson named after a uncle in Co.Tyrone.

John DICKSON is my husbands grandfather.

I have asked bdm re  Basil Hall Dickson but they just said to look under other names which I have, but so far have not found him.

Mmm ... I'm not sure either whether Caroline DICKSON (b. 1890) belonged to this family.
However, you'd mentioned earlier that Mary Jane (1865) was the 2nd daughter and now you've confirmed Teresa (1864) and Elizabeth (1862) are older ??
[I was working from the NZ BDM online Birth registrations and couldn't see one for Teresa ?? so I assumed that Caroline was perhaps the 4th daughter.   There was also a Caroline DICKSON, spinster, on West Coast electoral rolls for a number of years, but seemingly not connected to this family ? ]

*  Do you have the 1923 death printout for Mary DICKSON (mother) ?     It should have the ages and sexes of the children who survived her. [Have to say that sometimes the newspaper obituaries don't always get these things correct. ]

Yes, can see now that Teresa WELLS is buried in an adjacent plot to Mary DICKSON (mother) at Patea.

It's possible that Mary Jane DICKSON may have married but simply used the name, "Mary".
I'll check further for you.

Yes I should say Mary Jane is the 3rd daughter after checking again last night.

With the way bdm has been transferred onto their site, you will find quite a few mistakes.
Which if correct on microfiche they will correct.

That's why you missed Teresa.  I think if I remember rightly was under Terisa Dixon.
I know I also missed her birth reg also for quite some time, but had got Baptism's from Dunedin.

Yes there are other DICKSON families on the Coast, that aren't connected.

yes have printout for Mary DICKSON it isn't east to read, but have included it for you to read.

Also thank you as so easy to make mistakes and you have already helped me.

I also have found death certificates are only as good as the person knows the info.
I have a marriage and death certificates for someone, with two different sets of parents.

Yes she could have just used Mary and have tried working out ages re this.

I feel I am just missing something.

Hi Beg at present I don't have death certificate for William Stewart DICKSON, as have inquired re incorrect spelling of name etc.
I have to find out what to do so I can prove change possible.

I have photo of his headstone on county Tyrone web site.
