Hello Avril,

Durhamtown was a mining village about a mile south west of Bathgate. The Scottish Mining Site has a paragraph about the housing in the village.

thanks Mags, sounds like pretty undesirable housing!

Mrs. A,
Durahamtown Rows were the abode of workers for the Bathgate Chemical Works, the very first Oil Works in the world, extracting Oil from Shale by James (Parafin) Young and partners, it was situated just off the Whitburn Road on the way out of Bathgate, very near to present day Birniehill. You can look at maps here and read some history, the Old Rows are marked on one of the maps right next to the Chemical Works gates. There is a Google view of the area today, still a Manufacturing base.
