Coroner's Enquiry Death Chorlton 1858
« on: Sunday 14 December 14 05:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi from Down Under
Can anyone tell me if it would be possible to find a record for a Coroner's Enquiry in 1858...?
Death Certificate states Died 30th May 1858, Ashton Road, Ardwick - Name: James GALLAGHER, Male, 47 years, Carter, Found drowned.  Informant Edw Herford, Coroner, Manchester. Regd. 2 June 1858, Thomas Hallsworth, Registrar.

Not hopeful, but fingers crossed.

If no coroner's enquiry record survived, have you considered a newspaper report?

British Newspaper Archive has lots - growing numbers - of scanned newspapers. From what I've seen on here, users prefer the BNA's own search engine although the material is also available on FindMyPast. Both charge access fees, of course: and the other big drawback is you'll find so much to read that you will drift off from your research topic!
If no relevant newspapers are yet available (don't limit yourself to the local ones though - I have found gruesome coroners' inquests reported in local papers based far away from the event) it may well be worth an email to the local Records Office. As you have an exact date, reference to a microfilm will be easy and quick. Try http://www.manchester.gov.uk/info/448/archives_and_local_history for example....
Good luck with the search!
