Hi, I am following the thread with interest, could I ask what is probably a stupid question, is your man holding a pair of gloves, and if so why? was this common practice? or are they just for show?

From 1951 virtually all army other ranks wore battledress which had an open, not closed neck, and with a khaki shirt and tie. The beret had become standard issue even earlier- from 1943 -  but the date of introduction varied by regiment and corps as some did not wear the "normal" deep blue beret.
