I had started a post last night but it went south...I did some looking through Lovell's Montreal Directory and it is even harder to find your Joe, even as Joe. Was hoping he might have one listing with his proper name that we might find for around 1901, or 1904 when he was married? ( The earlier surnames seem to be all put together as Sing) ( serie Principal, then alphabetical listing for surname...) Also I am not sure how one looks for Alexandra but I can't see more than a few addresses there on the Street indexes if there at all...is it beyond the boundaries of the area for that directory? Maybe someone on here can answer that, I've not come across this extra difficulty before...   http://bibnum2.bnquebec.ca/bna/lovell/index.html

There was one On Sin laundry 1002 St. Catherine 1899/1900

Before posting on this forum, the earliest record I was able to find was my Ggrandparents marriage certificate from 1904 which says he was a laundry man from chateauguay.  Eventually they lived in Montreal but prior to 1904 he lived outside of it.  My mother is my oldest living link to this side of my damily, and she's of not much help.  Growing up, they faced a lot of racism so I believe because of that, they tried to hide most of that family history.  I asked my mother what Joe's real name was, her reply was, "I don't know; Joseph?"  She did at one point years ago say he was from Canton and may have had a family in the Philippines.   But seeing as he immigrated when he was 14 I'm not sure the legitimacy of the Philippines claim.  She also could have been confused and could have heard that he was Cantonese, so he could have been from Hong Kong.

In 1890 wouldn't a Chinese Head Tax have had to been paid?  Anybody know where to see the list of Immigrants who paid that tax?
