I am trying to find out when my Maternal Grandfather Patrick John Roche born in 1890 in Fermoy left for Southern Africa before the First World War. I have a picture of him wearing the uniform of an officer in the Southern Rhodesia Staff Corps.

Hello & welcome to Rootschat.  There is a Tree online that gives his birthplace as Kildorrery which is near Fermoy. www.nationalarchives.ie to view 1901 & 1911 Census. www.rootsireland.ie a pay site to view records covers area of North East Cork & has baptism & marriage records.
I would guess that he probably left from UK to go to South Africa. :)

Hi there,

I believe Patrick was son to Margaret O’Brien and James Roche in Kildorrery. My great grandmother was Honoria Maria Roche who was Patrick Roche’s sister. St. Bartholomews church in Kildorrery has 8 recorded of Margaret & James children baptised.

My great grandmother Honoria moved to South Africa with her husband Alfred Osburn
