Sorry I misunderstood.  With him being arrested as a traitor to the Boers I assumed that meant that he was Afrikaans.

Is it possible that Clive was in fact the child of Mabel's previous fiancé?  If so perhaps something is registered under his surname.

As to it being the previous fiance - Blimey. Never thought of that and if true - what a scandal! Will dig. He was a Bertie Fichardt of Brandkop.

The book that you mentioned previously - was it 'Punt van die Swaard'?  This appears to be a book about the Oertel veraaier!!
