Anne or Agnes?
« on: Saturday 15 March 14 21:20 GMT (UK) »
My 7xGG Jane Collecott was baptised at Gorran (or Gorran Haven excuse the confusion!  ;D ) on 05 Jun 1689. She was the daughter of James Collecott and Anne.

I have been trying to find the marriage of James and Anne but have been slightly confused by the only one I can find. James Collicoate and Agnes Trehane at Gorran on 19 Sep 1682.

Im wondering if Anne could be confused with Agnes? Does anyone have any advice on this?

Thanks.

As I understand it, Anne and Agnes might be considered variants of the same name.

The g in Agnes was not necessarily pronounced as we might pronounce it now.  Centuries ago it would be pronounced 'Annis' so that makes it easier to understand how it might be perhaps mistaken for Anne.

Different part of the country, but in Scotland I have a lady who was variously recorded as Ann, Agnes and Nancy!

Thank you Nell. I cant see any other James Collecotts (including variants) at all so it must be them. Thank you for clearing up my confusion!
