Thomas Butler
« on: Monday 25 November 13 11:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Hoping someone can help with my continued search for the above, I have now have some military documents which give me some more clues.  He was born c 1835 in County Mayo in the parish of Castlebar, on another document in his own hand his birth place is shown as , what looks like,
Ballybuck County Mayo .

Thanks in advance

Hi,

You may find the list of townlands for Mayo pre 1898 of some help http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_townlands_of_County_Mayo in finding the townland or similar you have found. Unfortunately I can find no obvious link to the Parish of Aglish (Castlebar).

There were three marriages in the 1830's in the parish a Theobald in 1837, Mary in 1832 and a possible of a Patrick Butler to a Bridget Lawless in March 1832. A record of the marriage can be obtained from the GRO Roscommon or you may wish to subscribe and obtain a copy of the record from http://mayo.rootsireland.ie/index.php. If a townland is mentioned on the marriage document it might clarify what Ballybuck may actually be. The name Butler does not appear in the Griffith Valuation of 1857.

If the parish indeed was Castlebar/Aglish you will have great difficulty as births pre 1855 are described as ''in disorder'' so it may be some time before they are fully searchable and some time searching at the NLI may still prove fruitless.

Hi

You were right I cannot trace this birth , when do you think records would be searchable or is that an impossible question.

I have it on good account that the date set is the 12th of Never. Recognition of transcription errors and similar issues has not always led to them being acted upon, in part due to resources and money.

There is an 1838 baptism record for Thomas Butler in Aglish RC parish popping up on RootsIreland that may tick a couple of boxes for you
