I think I may have the wrong Census entry for James McNAUGHT   because unless he married again If I got the birth cert. of daur. Janet that would confirm this

Wildgoose - your census entry in 1881 is correct. Rosanna Riley was the mother of Janet and Mary. She died in 1865 and James married Sarah Docherty. James dies in 1881.

James Rush might not be a relation but may have come from the same area as Roseanna. It would be worth checking up on her parents - James Riley and Ann Fitzpatrick
Added - no P of B for Rosanna - just 'Ireland'

Maybe worth checking the 1851 to see if she had come over in the famine time.

Just checked the 1851 - no sign of Ros(e)anna. Lots of Riley's in Mearns. There are a few possible Sarah Dochertys in Renfrew/Lanark but not enough info to identify accurately.

many thanks...again but that usually the case with Irish ancestors.  Actually these are my wife's.  Up until I started her family history she thought she was as Scottish as haggis.
