Stewarts of Piccadilly St.
« on: Thursday 01 September 11 08:03 BST (UK) »
After a going up blind alley's following family information that wasn't correct I have finally found the person I was looking for,
Susan Stewart b. 1895 in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire.
I found that she married Alexander Brogan in  November 7th 1914 in St Patrick's Church Anderston, both her parents on the marriage cert confirm it is the one I was looking for, The family had been in Middlesbrough since 1885 but had returned to Anderston around the 1903/5 time.
What I am trying to find out now is who lived at 136 Piccadilly Street ? which is the address she gave on her Marriage cert, I am looking particularly for other Stewarts.

Susan had siblings that had reurned to Glasgow, Kate b1884, John William b.1890  Mary Elizabeth b.1897 and James b.1899 along with parents John William and Sarah

Assistance would be appreciated

James

Have you looked at the 1911 census?

Hi James

There are no Stewarts that I can see showing as living at 136 Piccadilly Street on the 1913-14 Valuation Rolls.

See www.theglasgowstory.com/valsearch.php and add 'piccadilly' in the box named 'Where'.

Thank you both,
Sancti, no I haven't looked at the 1911 census, I was admonished by the Moderator the last time I asked for a look up of the 1911, however I will recharge my account at Scotland's People, and see what that brings, Monica,
the groom Alexander Brogan is showing as living at 69 Piccadilly St, could you possibly check that address please? I take it Piccadilly St is in Anderston?
Thanks again

James

Sancti, Thanks for info, I have a copy of the statutory marriages 644/110489
which states that Alexander Brogan lived at 69 Piccadilly st and Susan Stewart lived at 136 Piccadilly, Alexander's job at the time of his marriage was given as Engineer's machine man, on his marriage cert his father is described as  a marine fireman  so obviousley he was the tenant and the son lived with him.
There must be a gap when the Glasgow story info was collated and the marriage of these two people, although 69 appears to be correct not 109,
Clearly the Glasgow story info only indicates the tenant of the property and not other people living there, perhaps Susan was only lodging there at the time of her mariage.

Many thanks for your input

James

This Alexander Brogan is my Grandmother Mary Brogan's brother. On his father's birth certificate (Alexander born 1874 - my GGF) the address is 48 Piccadilly St. When GGF Alexander was married (1893) his address was 52 Piccadilly St. When my Grandmother Mary Brogan married Thomas McNamee (1916) the were both listed as living at 69 Piccadilly St.

Thanks Alimc65 and welcome to Rootschat,
It has been a along time since I last visited the Glasgow side of the family Stewarts, they were a migrant group in that the flitted between Middlesbrough and Anderston on numerous occasions, in
fact James the youngest son, born in Middlesbrough went back to Glasgow and  joined the Seaforth Highlanders.
Susan Brogan nee  Stewart and John William Stewart were the two I was looking for additional info on.
I must confess other personal problems have taken precedence the last few years so I may take up the challenge again soon.

Thanks for your input
James
