Hill family - New Zealand (again)
« on: Wednesday 25 June 14 14:12 BST (UK) »
family lore has it that:
George Stewart Hill* and his wife Louisa Caroline nee Richardson*, with their children George Stewart Hill, Lucy Matilda Hill*, Charles Richardson Hill and Isobel Hill sojourned for a while in New Zealand - though George Stewart pere may have died there.

I have at last (after over 50 years) traced the mother and children (I believe), thanks to family search, arriving from Dublin, Ireland at Hawkes Bay on 20th September 1875.

I know something of the 3 starred* folks above, but I really want to know something of the birth of GSH pere, I know his father was a police chief in Ireland and his daughter Lucy was born in Halifax Nova Scotia 17th May 1871.

I have Isobel's will with many bequests to Antipodean folk but I have failed to get any response from them to help me work out why New Zealand was chosen (supposedly for the father's health), again family lore suggested he was a freemason and had a so far untraceable relative in New Zealand: Sir Kenneth Hill.

Any suggestions/offers of help/information gratefully received

peter.

Hello,

We have a George Stewart HILL who died in 1918 aged 51 years.

www.dia.govt.nz/births-deaths-and-marriages

An obituary in the 'Feilding Star' appeared on 13.6.1918.

A death notice in the 'Auckland Star' on 12.6.1918. This mentions that he was the oldest son of*
George Stewart Hill, of Napier. So there is a small "footprint" for George Stewart senior. Maybe??

Edit: *the late

Janette & Minniehaha, thank you so much, all you have sent me is relevant - right to his grandfather's rank.

I feel quite emotional getting this after such a long time looking - I will have a busy day tomorrow updating all my records.

You may already have this information?

Mrs. C. Hanks was (I think) Edith Isabella Hill, born 1891. Married Charles Napier Hanks in 1910. Edith Isabella died in 1920, aged 28 years.

Mrs. W. Lawrence was (I think) Lilian Maud Hill, born 1893. Married William Lawrence in 1916.

The parents for the births shown above were recorded as Catherine Henrietta & George HILL.

Quote from: Pejic
George Stewart pere may have died [in NZ].

Hello...

It's possible that the following is the 1876 death of the father George...

1876/1765 - HILL, George Stuart - 34Y - d.o.d 17 May 1876

The following looks like the corresponding listing on the NZSG Burial CD...

HILL, George Stuart d.1876 aged 34 years,
Napier Burials fiche 1859-1895 ***
Napier Courthouse Death Register

Purchasing a printout of the 1876 death certificate may shed some light on the origins of George Stewart/Stuart HILL.

From 1875 onward additional details relating to the deceased were collected. These included birthplace, marriage details and names of parents. Fingers crossed that the informant knew this information.

***EDIT:
Have checked the Napier Burials fiche. It says that George Stuart HILL aged 34 year old died in 1876 in Napier. He was survived by four children, two boys and two girls. Nicely ties in with the four children mentioned in the original post.

I also checked the Old Napier Cemetery register. No mention of Charles Stuart HILL d.1876 but many of the cemetery records were lost in the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.

Regards
Beg
