I have searched the Scottishmining site for New Monkland, nothing showed up, but if they are the same people, I can see why you would want to be out of the pits, people you lived among and worked with, relatives, all dying horrendous deaths, every day, I don't think I could do it.                              I found on FreeCen Robert Brown, age 23 , unmarried engineer, born Slamannan, address Auchengray Coal Pit, 1851 census,  no clues though, no one with him, also moved either side but no names that ring bells, I have come to the conclusion the miner and the shoemaker are the same men but I would feel more comfortable with proof so I'll keep searching , thanks Monica for your help, Nikitah.
